I continue my quest to find “the best” nontoxic, clean beauty mascara. I’ve tried several, including Beauty Counter, Fitglow (you can read my review here), Mineral Fusion (you can read my review here), and now Honest Beauty Extreme Length Mascara. I can’t believe it, but at half the price of other brands, or even less, this is the winner for lengthening and thickening my lashes.
What is Honest Beauty?
Honest Beauty is the makeup brand portion of The Honest Company; You know, Jessica Alba’s company. She started it to fulfill her desire for safe and effective products when she was pregnant with her first child or shortly thereafter. The company is marketed as a ‘clean company’ (what does that actually mean?) with its mission stated as follows:
We’re a wellness brand with values rooted in consciousness, community, transparency and design. And we’re on a mission to empower people to live happy, healthy lives. Every day and in every way, we hold ourselves to an Honest standard. Because we believe that what you put on, in and around your body matters. A lot.
The company has a “NO List” of over 3,000 chemicals and materials it won’t use (but I can’t find a list of what those are). It lists every ingredient in its products so consumers can make knowledgeable choices about what they purchase.
The Honest Company makes a lot of products: baby products – diapers, wipes, bath soaps, lotions, baby formulas; vitamins – prenatal, adult and baby; bath and body care; cleaning products – laundry & multi-purpose; beauty products – makeup, skin care, and hair care. Its Extreme Length Mascara (which includes primer) is made without parabens, paraffins, silicones, mineral oil, and synthetic fragrances. It is not tested on animals, either.
Conveniently 2 in 1
When I bought this mascara, I didn’t realize that it has both mascara and primer; I thought the labeling was a marketing gimmick to make you think this mascara would stay on better because the formula contains primer. But no! One end is the primer, and the other is the mascara, all in one convenient tube. Both ends unscrew to reveal a different product.
You Must Use the Primer on Your Lashes
As I said, when I first got this mascara, I didn’t realize it was actually two different products in one package. I applied the mascara right onto my lashes and thought it was ‘meh’. I didn’t understand why it even had fans. Once I realized there’s a primer in the other end – the salmon colored end – everything changed!
I love using the primer. It’s so fulfilling to pull out the little wand covered in white goo (no, that’s not where I’m going, you pervert) and brush it through my lashes. I can see the primer actually extending my eye lashes. The brush is teeny and gets between the lashes well. When I’m finished, it looks like I have white eye lash extensions on.
The directions say to wait 30 seconds before applying mascara so the primer has time to set. It usually takes me that long to finish the other eye, so I don’t wait between applications. (Truthfully, I never remember I’m supposed to wait, and it turns out great, so you probably don’t need to worry about it.)
Time for Mascara to Make Those Lashes Lush
With some mascaras, application is messy or clumpy. I have to clean up my eyelids afterward or use a spooly to separate my lashes and get rid of clumps. (Again, see my review of Mineral Fusion mascara here.) But with the Honest Beauty Extreme Length Mascara, it’s easy and clean. This may be because I’ve primed my lashes. This is also because the wand is perfect for application.
The wand ‘bristles’ are a sculpted, rubbery plastic. They do a great job of getting between my lashes. I start at the base of my lashes and twirl the wand slowly as I pull away from my eye. I can feel the traction of application, but in a good way, not like it’s pulling. Even though I get close to the lash line, I don’t end up with mascara on my lid like I do when I use most other mascaras.
I thought it would be annoying or time consuming to apply two products (primer + mascara) all the time, but it’s not. I usually put on two or three coats of mascara, anyway, so applying the primer is like putting on one of the coats. The end look is so worth the extra 30 seconds (if it does add any time to the application process), anyway.
One more thing to note is that this product is scent-free. If I try to smell it (holding the tube to my nose and sniffing), I can smell something subtly clinical. But I definitely don’t smell anything during application or afterwards. That’s a good thing in my book.
Care-Free Wearing Mascara
The Honest Beauty Extreme Length Mascara wears great on my lashes all day long. It’s marketed as ‘long-wearing’, and I agree that it is. This mascara stays put – thank you, primer! – so there’s no smudging or flaking under my eyes. I rarely wear mascara on my lower lashes, which is where smudging comes from a lot of the time, but priming the lashes first keeps the mascara stuck in place.
Another thing I like is that my lashes are noticeably longer and thicker with this product (YAY!), which I was surprised to discover makes me feel younger. (If you aren’t old enough to appreciate this, go ask your mother.) I just feel better about my appearance when I’m wearing this mascara.
Wearing the mascara is comfortable, but I do feel like I have makeup on. My lashes feel stiffer than usual when I blink, if that makes sense, and my eyes get a little dry as time goes on. Other than that, this mascara doesn’t irritate my eyes or cause any issues for me.
Take It All Off!
I would have told you this mascara is waterproof since it stays on so well. (I’m a crier, yet I am streak-free at the end of the day.) But, thankfully, it removes easily. I don’t find makeup remover to work so well, but warm water and facial soap of any kind works great to remove it.
The Bottom Line
In sum, I love this mascara. Used with the primer, this mascara is fantastic. It applies easily, stays on all day long, doesn’t irritate my eyes, and removes easily. I like the packaging and that it’s a clean product.
I do look forward to taking it off by the end of the day, and removal requires more than makeup remover. Even so, there is really just one con for me, and it’s a stretch. The only negative I can come up with for this inexpensive, effective product is that it isn’t cleaner or that it doesn’t nourish and improve my lashes (like Fitglow or Mineral Fusion mascaras) while I wear it. That said, the Honest Beauty Extreme Length Mascara is pretty darn fantastic.
I wonder if you feel the same way if you’ve tried this mascara. Are your lashes longer and fuller with this product? Do you love it as much as I do? I’d love to hear from you!
Thank you for reading my blog, as always.
