Highlighter is such a fun makeup product. I started using it regularly a few years ago. Since then, I can’t get enough. It’s gorgeous on cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, Cupid’s bow, under eyebrows, in the inner corner of eyes….
This Beauty Counter cream highlighter was one of my first purchases when I jumped on the #cleanbeauty bandwagon. My nutritionist recommended Beauty Counter as part of my makeover for a safer, nontoxic lifestyle. She alerted me to the fact that skin is our largest organ, and it absorbs whatever we put on it. (How could I not know that already? I guess I never thought about it.) With this new gem of knowledge, I plunged head-first into converting everything I own to a cleaner version, starting with makeup and skincare.
Why Beauty Counter?
Beauty Counter is committed to using only clean, safe ingredients in its makeup, skincare, and bath & body lines. Unlike most green beauty lines, its products are known to be as luxurious and high performing as traditional makeup brands.
With Beauty Counter, you don’t have to trade performance for content. Over 80% of ingredients used are natural or plant derived, while they also include safe synthetic ingredients, fragrances, and preservatives. If you have any doubts, each ingredient is listed for every product.
As stated on its website,
“We’ve prohibited the use of more than 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals through “The Never List™” — all while ensuring our products perform and that they’re as indulgent as any other luxe shampoo, lipstick, or oil in the market.”https://www.beautycounter.com/our-story
The takeaway: No matter which Beauty Counter product you purchase, you can trust that it’s safe to use on your body.
Also of importance is Beauty Counter’s advocacy. From written petitions to lobbying in D.C., Beauty Counter is at the forefront of fighting for higher standards and safer ingredients in our makeup and skincare. There’s no doubt that any progress made in legislating safer products is thanks in part to Beauty Counter.
Illuminating Cream Highlighter
I’ve purchased a bunch of Beauty Counter products, one of them being the Illuminating Cream Highlighter. It’s in a twist tube with a top (think lipstick, but bigger). Actually, a lot of products – bronzers, foundations, cream blushes – are packaged like this now. Vapour Organic Beauty and Au Naturale are two organic lines that come to mind. Anyway, I love this packaging for its convenience and easy application.
I’ve applied this cream highlighter in multiple ways and still have not figured out the best method. First, I swipe the highlighter directly onto my face, gliding the tube along my cheek bones, which removes foundation or blush or any product I’ve already applied. Next, I use my finger to dab the highlighter on, but this also removes anything already on my face. Last, I wipe a brush over the tip of the highlighter and apply it to my face with the brush, but the same thing happens.
I am at a loss as how to apply this highlighter. At least in my case, it can’t be applied on top of make up.
How It Wears
This highlighter is a creamy white, more on the silvery side. It has the texture of a lip balm and glides onto skin beautifully. This means the highlighter glides on nicely, but this also means that it sits on top of the skin and feels a little sticky or grabby if touched. In addition, it wipes off easily.
As far as how it looks, this highlighter is subtle. The website says this “formula features a delicate, dewy finish,” and I must agree with that description. No matter how much I put on, it’s never overdone and gives only a subtle glow. It’s great if you’re going for a very natural highlight. No one would guess you have anything on.
Since I can’t use this product on top of foundation/blush/bronzer, I wear it on “no makeup” days. I apply it directly to my eyelids as a brightener, which adds just a subtle shimmer and lighter color to my lids.
My Bottom Line
Beauty Counter is an excellent brand that I recommend without hesitation. If you don’t wear foundation, this could be a great highlighter for you. It glides on smoothly and leaves just a hint of shimmer, looking incredibly natural.
For me, however, I do not like this highlighter. Application is a challenge because it removes my foundation/bronzer/blush that it sits on top of. Also, the shimmer or glow that it gives is so subtle that I usually can’t tell where I’ve applied it.
After trying the Beauty Counter Illuminating Cream Highlighter on and off over a couple of months, I finally gave up and threw it away. 🙁 🙁 🙁
I hate ending on a negative note but want to be honest with you about my experience and feelings on this product. I hope you find it helpful. If you like this review, you may enjoy reading my review on Honest Beauty mascara here.
